Today I finally got out after a 6 day break which must be one of my longest breaks this year. I love Christmas but it does require a lot of preparation. I’ve also recently cut an oak tree down in my back garden. It was just getting too big after only 21 years. Who knewContinue reading “A trail ride before Christmas.”

Making an everyday ride exciting.
After a wet weekend we’re enjoying a dry day, today. I walked the dog and found Duxbury woods to be very muddy. Fortunately Freddie doesn’t care. I’m not concerned when walking but it was certainly going to affect my mountain biking. The only realistic option, apart from a road ride, was to ride to HealeyContinue reading “Making an everyday ride exciting.”
Nice to get out.
Although we recently had a full week without rain it’s been a very wet autumn and the rest of the week doesn’t look too good. I was a bit tired after doing a hard days work yesterday and saw on the forecast that the best time to ride would be earlier in the morning. IContinue reading “Nice to get out.”
An easier ride.
My last 2 rides have been quite intense. 5 days ago I rode 5 continuous, high speed laps of Healey Nab which took me 57 minutes and 48 seconds. 3 days ago I rode 30 minutes up the canal bank, which may seem easy in itself, but I then made sure I got back inContinue reading “An easier ride.”
A complete change.
The ancient saying goes “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight, red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning.” This was a good guide yesterday because after a week without rain the weather changed. The reason for this saying, and the reason it’s fairly true with regard to the morning, in this case , is that clearContinue reading “A complete change.”
Training. But why?
Today we had clear blue sky as I set off for my ride. I’d decided to ride 5 non stop laps of the Healey Nab red graded trail. It requires concentration to keep the pace even, during around one hour of hard riding. I would have to gradually increase the effort I was putting inContinue reading “Training. But why?”
I’m thinking about next year, already.
Early this morning I started thinking about my idea to ride the Mary Towneley Loop (MTL), next year. It’s a circuit of 47 miles in the Pennines with 6,500 feet of climbing. I read some forum posts from people who have ridden the route previously and have realised that most riders complete the ride inContinue reading “I’m thinking about next year, already.”
Feeling hopeful.
I was doubly hopeful about my riding, today. Firstly, I was taking a new route up Healey Nab, to add some interest. Secondly, it was frosty this morning. The weather forecast informs us that we can expect up to a week of cold but dry weather. That’s a treat, at this time of year. IContinue reading “Feeling hopeful.”
Sport and transport.
I usually only use my bikes for sport but in the past two days I’ve used my Proflex to go shopping. Yesterday I first visited a cash machine where I didn’t even need to get off the bike. It was vastly more convenient than having to park the car 100 yards away on the carContinue reading “Sport and transport.”
More exploring and a change of bike.
When I washed my bike after the last ride I found that I had a broken spoke in the rear wheel. In the old days, when the brakes used the wheel rim to slow you, you’d usually know if this happened because you could feel a buckle in the wheel when you used the brake.Continue reading “More exploring and a change of bike.”
