I’ve had a bad cold which settled on my chest. According to a neighbour, if a cold is above the throat, you can carry on as normal. If it’s below the throat you need to rest. Yesterday I hadn’t done any exercise since my last pedal boat trip 6 days ago, which had completely exhaustedContinue reading “Back but not 100%.”

So tired.
I’m having new bearings fitted to the rear wheel of my Boardman mountain bike and I won’t get the wheel back until next week. This gave me the opportunity to ride one of my classic bikes and I chose the 1996 vintage Proflex Attack LE. It has around 3 inches if suspension travel at eachContinue reading “So tired.”
Great Hill in the sunshine.
I haven’t ridden my mountain bike since last weekend but I did get some good exercise launching my newly built pedal powered boat on Wednesday. Today, though, I wanted to get a good training ride in with plenty of climbing. I covered 15.14 miles with 1,521 feet of ascent. I always think that 100 feetContinue reading “Great Hill in the sunshine.”
Off Road Again.
After some discomfort in my right knee I rode along the canal bank for my last ride. Today I was back off road properly with a ride most of the way up Great Hill, followed by my favourite descent of all through Brinscall Woods. If you’ve read my writing previously you may think that IContinue reading “Off Road Again.”
Changing my plan during the ride.
Yesterday I set off to ride Brinscall Woods for its fantastic downhill sections, which I intended to ride at least twice. Early in the ride, though, whilst skirting the bottom of Healey Nab I realised that the ground was still very wet in places. Apparently we’ve had one of the wettest ever Marches and despiteContinue reading “Changing my plan during the ride.”
A good training ride.
Last time out I had intended to ride 5 laps of the trails on our local hill, Healey Nab, but I suffered from a breakage on the bike which I’ve ridden for most of the winter. I ‘d only managed a single lap of the trail so decided to make amends and ride 5 lapsContinue reading “A good training ride.”
Problems with my winter bike.
This winter I want to use my Trek Fuel EX8 mountain bike to save wear on my slightly newer bike. It has 29″ wheels and a 1 X 10 transmission. With only one chain ring at the front there’s less to go wrong in muddy, winter condition which add an extra burden of wear toContinue reading “Problems with my winter bike.”
Trying my winter bike.
Winter is hard on mountain bikes. The wet and grit cause lots of wear of all moving parts. The transmission is especially vulnerable but suspension bushes can also suffer badly. Ideally you wouldn’t want to put your best bike or bikes through this and classic mountain bikes are even more prone to wear from muddyContinue reading “Trying my winter bike.”
Third time unlucky?
They say “Third time lucky, third time unlucky”. I set myself 3 targets for my mountain biking this year and I’ve already accomplished 2 of them, but will I be unlucky with my third? I didn’t seem to be doing enough training for the first challenge, a ride of 40 off road miles with 4,500Continue reading “Third time unlucky?”
When you just need to get out.
For a variety of reasons I haven’t done any exercise more strenuous than dog walking for 5 days. I stayed away on Friday night, then had a busy weekend with rainy days so I couldn’t get out on either bike or pedal powered boat. Today we were also told to expect showers before a moreContinue reading “When you just need to get out.”
