Many cyclists use exercise bikes for virtual racing but I spied an opportunity for a race using the app. Strava. A local cyclist has set up a Strava segment called “Birkacre race route?”. It starts and finishes at the high point of a circuit of 2.47miles, drops gently on a rough rocky track before itContinue reading “Entering a virtual race.”

I found the limit of 29″ wheels!
My plan for today’s ride was to use a road route to the village of Rivington where I’d ride 2 very different downhill sections in the terraced gardens. This would also give a valuable training element with 2 tough climbs to reach the top of each descent. The weather was very still with occasional, hazyContinue reading “I found the limit of 29″ wheels!”
Remembrance.
I was accepted by the Royal Navy to train as an officer in 1985. I would have gone on to fly helicopters but unfortunately my medical history intervened. I’d had a brief illness in my teens and it was decided that I was too much of a risk to invest a massive amount of moneyContinue reading “Remembrance.”
Mud Fest.
The rain has been shocking this week. It’s prevented me from riding for 5 days and since my last ride was a road ride it’s been 9 days since I’ve ridden on the dirt. I considered another road ride today since I knew the trails would be exceedingly muddy but I’d watched a Youtube video.Continue reading “Mud Fest.”
A road ride, which was surprisingly good!
I usually prefer to ride trails, even if I’m just getting from A to B. Today, though, conditions would have been too wet for a decent off road ride so I chose to ride the roads. This decision was assisted by my wife Ali, who is convinced that my muddy riding gear is bound toContinue reading “A road ride, which was surprisingly good!”
Great Hill again.
With continuing dry weather I thought it was a good chance to ride my current favourite trail. From home to the top of Great Hill, which rises to 1,250 feet, and back via a long and fabulous downhill through Brinscall Woods is around 15.5 miles with almost 1,500 feet of ascent. Looking at the app.Continue reading “Great Hill again.”
The need for speed.
Today’s ride focused on speed on 2 different occasions for different reasons. My intention was to ride to Brinscall Woods to use the superb downhill which I’ve only discovered this year and to descend 3 times. I took my usual, mainly off road route to the woods and rode the technical side of the Goit,Continue reading “The need for speed.”
The best downhill in Lancashire.
I’ve heard the route from the top of Great Hill down to White Coppice described as one of the best downhills in Britain. I like it but wouldn’t rate it so highly. It’s only a few miles to the hill, though the climb takes some time. Back in the late 1990s I rode the hillContinue reading “The best downhill in Lancashire.”
Returning to Great Hill.
I’d hoped to ride Great Hill, which rises to around 1,250 feet above sea level, on my last two rides but had to change my plan for various reasons. Today I had plenty of time and the weather was dry, though I knew the ground wouldn’t be so good, especially under the trees. I checkedContinue reading “Returning to Great Hill.”
Changing trails.
After the driest spring on record in England we’ve had a very wet period. The temperatures have dropped from nearly 30 Celsius a couple of weeks ago to only 13 Celcius (55 Fahrenheit) for this morning’s ride. It is also windy now but the good news is that this will help to dry the soakingContinue reading “Changing trails.”
