I’ve been writing about my mountain biking for over 5 years but recently I’ve written very few posts. I’ve mentioned a number of times that I’ve had to radically alter my riding due to a heart valve problem, which developed suddenly in June of last year. This has meant that I must not stress myContinue reading “So, whatever happened to mountain biking?”

Getting used to the E bike.
I took my newly converted E bike out again yesterday. I’ve renamed the Trek Fuel EX8 as the Trek Fuel EV8. It still needs some repairs after use last winter. After the pawl spring in the freehub broke I dumped it, unwashed, in my bike shed and had rather forgotten how many other components wereContinue reading “Getting used to the E bike.”
Seven Swans a Swimming.
Christmas is still too far away to be giving much thought to seasonal songs but today I saw 7 swans during my mountain bike ride. I set off with no firm plan but decided to access the canal bank where I’d ride south to the White Bear Marina. Here I would turn northward to rideContinue reading “Seven Swans a Swimming.”
Changing my plan during the ride.
Yesterday I set off to ride Brinscall Woods for its fantastic downhill sections, which I intended to ride at least twice. Early in the ride, though, whilst skirting the bottom of Healey Nab I realised that the ground was still very wet in places. Apparently we’ve had one of the wettest ever Marches and despiteContinue reading “Changing my plan during the ride.”
A good training ride.
Last time out I had intended to ride 5 laps of the trails on our local hill, Healey Nab, but I suffered from a breakage on the bike which I’ve ridden for most of the winter. I ‘d only managed a single lap of the trail so decided to make amends and ride 5 lapsContinue reading “A good training ride.”
Problems with my winter bike.
This winter I want to use my Trek Fuel EX8 mountain bike to save wear on my slightly newer bike. It has 29″ wheels and a 1 X 10 transmission. With only one chain ring at the front there’s less to go wrong in muddy, winter condition which add an extra burden of wear toContinue reading “Problems with my winter bike.”
Trying my winter bike.
Winter is hard on mountain bikes. The wet and grit cause lots of wear of all moving parts. The transmission is especially vulnerable but suspension bushes can also suffer badly. Ideally you wouldn’t want to put your best bike or bikes through this and classic mountain bikes are even more prone to wear from muddyContinue reading “Trying my winter bike.”
The bike for winter.
I have a Trek Fuel EX8 mountain bike which I inherited from my son. It has 29″ wheels and 120 mm of suspension travel at each end. The picture above is from early this year when I was last using it. It’s a 2014 model which was a time of transition in mountain bike design.Continue reading “The bike for winter.”
Why a 25 year old mountain bike is still worth riding.
I didn’t ride my 25 year old Proflex bike entirely out of choice, today. I still haven’t got the wheels for my Boardman, a bike of a mere 4 years, back from the shop yet, having had new bearings and a pawl spring in the free hub fitted. The weather has, however, remained ideal forContinue reading “Why a 25 year old mountain bike is still worth riding.”
The full Great Hill experience.
Great Hill might seem like a misnomer for a mound rising to just 1,250 feet above sea level but from some viewpoints it looks quite big. Also I was beginning my mountain bike ride from home at under 300 feet, dropping lower early in the ride. I’ve replaced the front mech. cable on the TrekContinue reading “The full Great Hill experience.”
